[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
AND YOU HAD FIFTEEN MINUTES TO SPEND WITH ME OR YOUR FRIENDS
character overview
What can one say about Ren? Well, he stands out. Or at least he tried to stand out. When dressed in his street wear, his clothing is quite vibrant. Bright, graphic shirts, colored and stylized jeans. His school clothes, however, are a little more muted, a little more in line with the rest of the folks around him. This, however, does not keep him from trying to act out.
Physically, he is lithe and of just above average height. He has red hair that he takes a certain pride in, and green eyes that stand out against both the hair and his healthy, peach colored skin. Occasionally, he will have a bruise or cut from practice, but these are far and few between.
Ren talks loudly. In many ways, subtlety is not his strength. It does not work with him. As a member, and the captain, of the school's basketball team, Ren is used to eyes being on him, and goes out of his way to make sure he's in the spotlight. This reflects his style on and off the court, often thrusting himself into the middle of things.
Beyond basketball, which he has been playing a significant amount of his life, Ren also enjoys a great many other sports, such as soccer, baseball, and he likes running. During his long runs through the town, Ren often listens to a playlist of music, sometimes singing to himself under his breathe. Though it makes his parents worry, he is particularly fond of taking to the streets during rainy days and running and playing through the rain.
Beyond that, he's a fairly typical teenage boy. He likes girls, hanging out with friends, sometimes rolls his eyes at the doofy things his family does. He does well enough in school, well enough that no one bothers him, though he could do better. Socially, he does better and enjoys a lot of the attention afforded to him as the upstart captain of the basketball team.
He has a few habits, ones that he is not aware of until someone points it out to him. When forced to sit still, he'll often tap his foot or swing his feet. He is known to tap his fingers as well. Out of boredom, he'll often crack jokes, sometimes at the expense of others.
bio
Ren did not always live in Sakura-zai, nor did he always attend Mankai Academy. Of course, he's not exactly new in town either, but his origins lie elsewhere. Ren was born in one of the many wards of Tokyo, his father one of the many architects for the city and his mother a nurse in one of the local hospitals. Perhaps uneventfully, Ren was born, and barely a year later, a young sister followed, named Naoko. For a few years, the family lived as a fairly typical family. Before long, Ren took to walking and talking, and not long after that, he began watching sports in the evening with his father. The young child took a vested interest in them, and quickly asked his mother and father if he could play them. Thinking that some physical activity might be good for their young child, the parents quickly signed Ren up for a local youth soccer group.
And Ren took to it well enough. For a young child, he had good motor skills and a lot of drive to win. Though it was casual, it quickly became apparent that Ren got a lot of satisfaction out of the activity, much to his parents' happiness. Little did they know, it was the start of a lifelong interest in physical pursuits.
Before long, Ren entered school proper and he quickly worked his way into the academic sports arena. Perhaps on nothing more than a whim, Ren signed up for the youth bastketball league. What he found was a sport that quickly supplanted anything else as his crowning interest. Like many children, Ren became obsessed. He dedicated himself to the sport as a young boy, quickly honing his talents and developing his skills in his ever increasing drive to win and be a star. Luckily for him, his parents encouraged the idea of team sports, and the idea of being a winner. It was all the encouragement he needed, because year in and year out, he was back on the court, with the occasional other sport filling in during the off-season.
Outside of sports, his life was fairly normal. He had plenty of friends, some like his friend Arata who has remained a constant presence in his life, and he did well enough in school. Years passed with minor twists and turns, but his love for games, and his drive to win remained consistent. However, life would throw a curveball at him before long.
When he was twelve years old, his parents announced a move to Sakura-zai. It seemed as if his father had secured a new, less strenuous job there, and his mother was in the process of applying to the local hospital as well. It seemed that both he and his sister were being transferred to a local school. And at first, Ren was devastated. He was being ripped away from his friends, from his team, from the court he'd always known. What would this do to his season? Like many children would have, he protested, but like all children who did, it quickly became apparent that there were somethings you could not stop. And it was the worst moment of his life.
At least for a time. He got over it, eventually, but not without dragging his feet. When he arrived in Sakura-zai, he was more than a little sour. A young boy with no friends in a strange town. What was he to do? Well, aside from be glued to his phone and texting his friends back home, he took to wandering the pleasant seaside town. And it did not take long for him to find the local basketball court. For a moment, he watched the older kids from the sidelines, gazing on as they dribbled the ball back and forth. But he could not resist the call of the court, and before long, he presented himself to the group and demanded to play. At first they laughed, but perhaps out of kindness, they allowed him to play. With a lifetime of sports at his back, Ren quickly established he was not somebody to laugh at, showing prowess on the court, though in many ways he could not compete with the older boys. However they soon enough accepted Ren as one of their own, and he took to playing basketball with them every day, as the town changed around him with Kirijo's influence shaping the landscape.
So, it came as no surprise that when Ren was finally old enough to go out for Mankai's proper basketball team, he did. And, as he expected, he made the team, and he was assigned the Jersey "Number Four". But it quickly became apparent that something was not right on the team: everybody was so lazy. They had no drive, no passion. It seemed like they just wanted to be part of the team, but not actively participate. It was maddening. But Ren did as Ren was wont to do: he kept putting himself into his craft with everything he had. However, one man does not a team make. They suffered lose after lose. And this continued throughout Ren's career with the team. Lose after lose, disappointment upon disappointment. Did nobody but him care?
It seemed that somebody else did, and they took notice. Much to Ren's surprise, the young man was named Captain of the team, at the young age of sixteen. And while some of the older members grit their teeth and complained, the decision stood. After all, no one could doubt his dedication to the sport.
And so, that is how Ren stands today. The leader of a band of losers, people with not even an iota of the dedication he had. But where there was a will, there was a way. Perhaps, if he just tried, he might be able to change their luck. With enough dedication, anything was possible. The young man was no stranger to hard work up until now, and he was prepared to redouble his efforts. Even if that means shaking things up...
