03. The Tarot
The arcana is through which all is revealed
0. Fool
Despite the moniker, Fools are by no means foolish. Often, they're clever and tactical, along with having a flexible and agreeable personality that can adapt to many social situations at a time. Both an empty card and one of the most important in the deck, the Fool represents infinite possibility and is personified by extroversion, whimsy and the unknown. Its power is strengthened by openness and dulled by restraints.
I. Magician
Magicians are typically show-stoppers who love attention and getting to protect what's important to them and explore new places and things with others. Loud and... well, not as proud as you might think, they represent hidden potential and friendship. The Magician is personified by loyalty, comedy and confidence. Its power is strengthened by self-acceptance and dulled by self-deprecation.
II. Priestess
The card of wisdom, the Priestess is the kind of person you turn to when you have emotional problems, representing intuition. They are typically right-brained, approaching situations from unusual angles of perception and often catching others off-guard with their wide range of internal knowledge. Personified by compassion, gentleness and intellect, its power is strengthened by trust and dulled by wariness.
III. Empress
Empresses are perhaps the most naturally powerful of the Tarot, containing a kind of leadership unmatched by most. They are known to repress feelings, though, and have an icy feel to them that typically lifts around those they trust most. Representing motherhood, they are personified by serenity, power and mercy. Its power is strengthened by camaraderie and dulled by isolation.
IV. Emperor
The spear counterpart of the Empress, the Emperor takes a more head-on approach to leadership issues and represents fatherhood. They can be somewhat hot-headed and rough, but often have a merciful and more emotional side that only some see. They are personified by courage, power and determination. Its power is strengthened by patience and blocked by anger.
V. Hierophant
The Hierophant is a counterpart to the Priestess and the cart of intelligence, dealing more with the act of learning and teaching others. They are mentor figures to others, taking the lead in an advisor-like tactical position. Representing knowledge, they are personified by seriousness, reservedness and leadership. Its power is strengthened by faith and blocked by doubt.
VI. Lovers
The Lovers is a hub of communication- whether that be through friendly talks, angered scolding or flirtatious banter. They are often people who have to make difficult choices and come to hard truths, but acceptance and declaration of those truths is what makes them stronger. Representing decisions, they are personified by decisiveness, flexibility and insight. Its power is strengthened by affirmation and blocked by silence.
VII. Chariot
Chariots are incredibly driven- characterized by the kind of person who never gives up, no matter the situation, often for a specific cause or somebody important to them. They are strong of heart, but often struggle with ethical issues due to their mix of power and gentleness. Representing pride, they are personified by determination, character and self-love. Its power is strengthened by selflessness and blocked by self-pity.
VIII. Justice
Justice is blind, as some say. Those with the Justice card are often those who see the world in a black-and-white fashion (Justices are most often young children, after all), believing that good people deserve blessing and the evil deserve punishment, regardless of circumstances. Representing lawfulness, they are personified by compassion, fairness and naivete. Its power is strengthened by understanding and blocked by rigidity.
IX. Hermit
Hermits are, as you might guess, not the most social of cards. The Hermit is a card of introspection and understanding of the self, though they often have the habit of being very anti-social (for better or for worse) and are prone to placing social health last on their list of priorities. Representing guidance, they are personified by solitude, wisdom and honesty. Its power is strengthened by meditation and blocked by external stress.
X. Fortune
Fortune is a plaything of the heavens. Or, perhaps not? Those with the Fortune card often struggle with their "fate", or any known duty in life they may have. They may have a close relationship with luck, be it positive or negative. Some choose to accept their fate, while others will stop at nothing to change it. Representing the uncontrollable, they are personified by calculation, grace and mystery. Its power is strengthened by kindness and blocked by envy.
XI. Strength
Strength, in contrast with its name, very rarely represents physical strength. The strength card is strength of heart, hence the young woman sitting peacefully with the lion. Someone who holds the Strength card almost always values peace highly and dislikes fighting altogether. Representing harmony, they are personified by love, passion and pacifism. Its power is strengthened by teamwork and blocked by discord.
XII. Hanged
The Hanged card is one of meditation. Those who have it often come into contact with trauma of some sort, or at the very least something they have difficulty accepting and coming to terms with. They are typically quiet and gentle, bottling up their feelings. Representing fasting, they are personified by spirituality, introspection and perception. Its power is strengthened by self-sacrifice and dulled by cowardice.
XIII. Death
Death is not in and of itself an unlucky or destructive card. Those who hold it are subject to ever-changing circumstances, and may clamor to gain control of their lives. Despite that, they live something adventurous and exciting, and it might take time for them to understand that they are part of a beautiful, constructive process rather than something evil or negative. Those who understand death take pride in it. They represent transformation and are personified by thought, revolution and pathos. Its power is strengthened by acceptance and dulled by resistance.
XIV. Temperance
The Temperance card is a true representation of harmony. The four seasons, the four elements, light and darkness- all of them need to coexist in order to create the Earth. Those who hold this card are gentle and often love nature, but can have difficulty realizing the balance of light and dark within themselves and how it is all necessary. They represent balance and are personified by love, traditionalism and goodness. Its power is strengthened by equality and blocked by domination of one trait.
XV. Devil
Devil holders can be across a wide range. The card is most often held by someone who is considered "unacceptable" by society in some way or another. Whether it's by gender identity, sexuality, class or other often discriminated trait, they often are forced into a "me against the world" mentality and have difficulty trusting others. They represent the abnormal and are personified by healthy relationships, safety and uniqueness. Its power is strengthened by friendship and blocked by separation.
XVI. Tower
Tower holders most often represent someone who is defined by something serious that happened in their past. Their current public persona is defined by events rather than individual traits, and they can be considered "fallen" in some way or another. They represent past mistakes and are personified by regret, seniority and guidance. Its power is strengthened by sensibility and blocked by hubris.
XVII. Star
Those with the Star card are easily identifiable by their unmatched upbeat nature. Truly a "star" in and of themselves, they're often popular, altruistic and gentle-hearted. For better or for worse, they're often the ones who have to try and bring up the mood when things have gone horribly wrong. They represent hope and are personified by tolerance, brotherhood and generosity. Its power is strengthened by optimism and blocked by despair.
XVIII. Moon
The Moon card is perhaps the one with the least solid definition. Those who have it have the power of night in all of its gentleness, mysteriousness and danger. Moon often represents something of interest or a problem that needs to be solved- those with the card might find themselves in charge of trying to complete a solution of some kind. The Moon represents the unknown and is personified by variability, illumination and industriousness. Its power is strengthened by sincerity and blocked by lies.
XIX. Sun
The Sun is the ultimate light, and those who hold it are bright in more ways in one. The Sun, Moon and Stars are known as the Three Cards of Light, with Sun being the foremost of the three. Ironically, they also often go through harsh trauma and despair, but they will somehow come out of anything with a smile. Representing light, the Sun is personified by positivity, generosity and innocence. Its power is strengthened by perseverance and blocked by defeatism.
XX. Aeon
Aeon is a variation of Judgement found in the Thoth deck. While Judgement is a concept not possessed by most normal humans alone, Aeon is a singular version that is held by those who keep a sense of adventure close to their heart. Aeons pursue something or another, perhaps answers, perhaps a person, or perhaps something else entirely. Dedicated to understanding the theories behind everything, Aeons can be both scholarly and full of emotion.
